Alloys 317LMN and 317L are molybdenum-containing austenitic stainless steels that offer better resistance to chemical attack than conventional chromium-nickel austenitic stainless steels such as alloy 304. In addition, 317LMN and 317L alloys have greater fracture stress strength and better ductility than conventional stainless steels in high-temperature environments. All are low carbon grades or "L" grades that provide resistance to sensitization during welding and other heat treatments. "M" and "N" refer to compositions containing incremental molybdenum and nitrogen. The combination of molybdenum and nitrogen is beneficial for improving pitting and crevice corrosion resistance, especially in high temperature environments containing acidic compounds, chlorides and sulfides. Nitrogen is also beneficial in increasing the strength of these alloys. Both alloys are designed for harsh operating environments such as flue gas desulfurization systems.

The recommended working temperature for thermal processing is1652-2102°F (900-1150°C)

The alloy cannot be processed below 1742" F (950C). If the final forming temperature is lower than this value, it must be solution annealed in the range of 19762156° F (1080-1180° C). Rapid quenching is also necessary ongoing.

Compared with the standard 304 or 304L, its increased aluminum and ammonia content means that it requires more powerful processing equipment.
